KATHMANDU:- The first phase of removing unplanned and vulnerable settlements along the Bagmati River and its tributaries has been completed in the Kathmandu Valley.
The campaign, launched on April 25 by Kathmandu Metropolis, Kathmandu Valley Development Authority, High-Powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, and the District Administration Office Kathmandu, targeted settlements built on public and government land.
According to the District Administration Office, a total of 2,687 houses and huts were cleared during the operation. The drive covered areas including Thapathali, Gaurigaun, Manohara, Kalopul, Balkhu, Bansikhat, Shankhamul, Kalimati, Balaju, Swayambhu, Gaushala, Dhobikhola and Kapan.
Authorities have arranged temporary accommodation for displaced families through holding centres. The Urban Development Ministry said preparations are underway to provide longer-term temporary housing in Ichangunarayan and other locations. Officials also said efforts are being made to ensure that children’s education and livelihoods are not disrupted during resettlement.
Following the completion of the first phase, the government said further action on other settlements will be taken only after identifying genuine squatters and ensuring proper management, according to the Prime Minister’s press and research expert Dipa Dahal.
Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority has begun digital recording of landless and unorganised settlers under the direction of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. The process will first cover those in and outside holding centres before expanding to other districts.
