NRNA elections before general elections: Mahesh Shrestha

-

KATHMANDU:- Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) President Mahesh Kumar Shrestha has said that elections for the association’s new leadership will be held before the general election in Nepal.

In an interview with Ukalo Online, a Nepal-based news outlet, Chairman Shrestha informed that the association’s elections will be held before March 5. According to him, “It has been said that the elections will be held within six months.” “The House of Representatives elections are being held in Pal, and the union elections should be completed before that,” he said.

Shrestha said that the association will make efforts to reconcile all parties by holding a general convention within the next six months. According to him, “Initiatives have been taken to reconcile. Elections are often controversial—especially over the electoral system and the potential for disputes over convention delegates. “The current structure and statute of the NRNA cannot accommodate Nepalis around the world. A radical change is needed,” he clarified.

According to him, there is a risk that disputes will continue to arise in the coming days due to the weaknesses in the current structure. “Even if it can be resolved somehow during this term, comprehensive changes in the structure and statutes will have to be made in the next term,” he said.

Shrestha said the current structure is highly election-oriented. “There is a situation where elections are held every two years and disputes increase due to those elections. Such frequent elections are not appropriate in an institution like ours.” “Models like the United Nations, Lions Club, Rotary Club might be suitable,” he suggested.
