SAN FRANCISCO (AP):- Federal immigration officers shot and wounded a migrant in central California on Tuesday while trying to arrest him, authorities said.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said federal officers in Stanislaus County were approaching a car driven by Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez when he tried to run an ICE officer over with his vehicle.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said he is a suspected gang member wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection to a murder. He was taken to a hospital for his injuries.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said they were not involved in the incident
Motorists should expect significant delays in the area, which is off Interstate 5 about 85 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco.
Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were also on the scene, DHS said.
