CHITWAN:- 38,200 layers of chickens have been destroyed after bird flu (Avian Influenza H5N1) infection was detected in Chitwan.
The chickens along with their feed were destroyed for control after the infection was confirmed at a commercial chicken farm in Khairhani Municipality-1. According to the Animal Services Office, Chitwan, the destruction of chickens began on June 24 after bird flu infection was confirmed in chickens on June 23, said Dr. Prabhat Neupane, head of the office.
According to him, after destroying chickens for three consecutive days, the farm was completely cleaned and sealed on Tuesday. Similarly, 1,405 boxes of eggs and 12 tons of feed were also destroyed from the farm, informed Chief Dr. Prabhat Neupane.
“We had sent samples to the Animal Disease Research Laboratory, Tripureshwor. After avian influenza H5N1 was detected there, we destroyed the chickens, eggs and feed for three days,” he said. According to Chief Dr. Neupane, work is also underway to collect samples from other places.
Earlier, on Chaitra, (April) 12, 17,870 layer chickens and 935 local chickens from another nearby farm were culled after infection was confirmed at a commercial poultry farm in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-4.
Nepal has an investment of over Rs 70 billion in the poultry sector.
