LONDON:- The 24th edition of the Gurkha Cup, held at the Queens Avenue Sports Ground in the Aldershot Military Area of the UK, concluded on Sunday.
Thousands of spectators had gathered at the Queens Avenue Ground to watch the 24th Gurkha Cup, organized by Tamudhin UK. The competition, which started at 9 am, saw more teams participate this time than last year. A total of 56 teams, including 38 in the main category, 16 in the veteran category and 2 in the women’s category, competed.
In the main men’s category, Rangbhang Samaj UK emerged as the winner. In the final, Rangbhang Samaj defeated Guruji Elite FC by a 2-0 goal margin to lift the title. The winner, Rangbhang Samaj UK, received £3,500 in cash, a shield, a trophy and a certificate. The runner-up, Guruji Elite FC, received £2,000, a trophy and a certificate.
In the main category, Sam Gurung of Rangbhang Samaj UK was declared the best manager. Eniola Alamo of Nepzum FC was the top scorer, while Nwang Sherpa of Rangbhang Samaj UK was declared the player of the match.
In the women’s category, Tamang Samaj FC emerged as the winner and Roundbolt FC as the runner-up. The women’s winner received a prize of 600 pounds and the runner-up received a prize of 400 pounds. In the women’s category, Tamang Samaj UK player Suk Lamu Tamang was declared the Player of the Match.
The winning players and teams were presented with awards by the chief guest, Mayor of Rushmore Borough Council, Calum Stewart, Tamudhin UK President Jumkaji Gurung, Himalayan Jet’s Dipendra Gurung, NRNA Central President Dr. Hemraj Sharma, Military Attaché of the Nepali Embassy, Brigadier General Anup Shah, and others.
Speaking before the final match, the chief guest, Mayor of Rushmore Borough Council, Calum Stewart, congratulated the Gorkha Cup organisers. He said that such an event would help promote local businesses and strengthen integration between communities.
Meanwhile, UK President Jumkaji Gurung expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped make the Gorkha Cup a grand success. He said that this event has become a joint event of the Nepali community in the UK and that such a large event would not be possible without everyone’s support and commitment.
Program Coordinator and Sports Secretary Captain Deepak Ghale delivered a welcoming speech and expressed gratitude to the supporters, volunteers, players, sponsors, and spectators.
The formal program was conducted by General Secretary Dr. Vishal Gurung, while the prize distribution program was conducted by Secretary Bimal Gurung.
During the program, Tamudhin UK honored the Mayor of Rushmore Borough Council with 500 pounds, Colonel BG of the Gorkha Welfare Trust with 500 pounds, Scottish national under-15 football player Melissa Regmi and Legend of Gorkha Cup winner Dennis Maharjan with cash.
The formal program was attended by Brigadier General Anup Shah, Military Attaché of the Nepalese Embassy, Lieutenant Colonel McPherson, Commander of the Aldershot Garrison, Colonel Robinson of the Brigade of Gorkhas, Scottish national under-15 football player Melissa Regmi, and Himalayan Jet Director Dipendra Gurung, among others.

The first prize was sponsored by Himalayan Jet. Other sponsors included Mum King Swindon, Mum Station Aldershot, Pokhara Restaurant London, IME London, Soltiz Kitchen Bulford, Hampshire Accounting, Napbreeze, True X, Lt. Col. Bill Withers and Paperwork Solutions. Secretary Bimal Gurung presented the list of sponsors and expressed his gratitude.
The children of Sayapatri Cultural Group performed an attractive dance at the event. Along with football, Nepali food, costumes, dance, music and community gatherings have established the Gorkha Cup as a major festival reflecting Nepali identity in the UK.
