LOS ANGELES:- A US federal court has blocked the Trump administration’s decision to end TPS granted to thousands of immigrants from Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua. District Judge Trina Thompson in San Francisco issued the order on Wednesday, temporarily suspending the administration’s move.

Judge Thompson noted in her ruling that the administration sought to end TPS without properly assessing the current situation in these three countries. The court ruled that the decision, which affects about 89,000 migrants, did not take into account whether the countries were safe for them to return to.

In particular, the judge accepted the argument that the decision was motivated by racial hatred, citing past statements by President Donald Trump and Homeland Secretary Christie Noem. The ruling said, “Administration officials’ portrayal of immigrants as criminals and attackers reflects discriminatory thinking toward a particular community.”

In the context of Nepal, this decision has provided great relief to more than 7,000 Nepali citizens in the United States. The Trump administration had been trying to remove this facility provided to Nepalis after the devastating 2016  earthquake. With the current order, the right of Nepalis to legally reside and work in the United States is temporarily secured.

Previously, various courts had blocked attempts to revoke TPS for immigrants from Sudan and other countries. The Trump administration has been claiming that ending TPS is in the US national interest as part of its policy of tightening immigration rules.
