WASHINGTON:- Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem today announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Yemen. The termination will be effective 60 days after the notice is published in the Federal Register.
Yemen was initially designated for Temporary Protected Status on September 3, 2015, due to the ongoing armed conflict there. Yemen’s TPS was extended and redesigned by DHS from 2017 to 2024.
“After reviewing the situation in the country and consulting with appropriate U.S. government agencies, I have determined that Yemen no longer meets the requirements of the law for temporary protected status,” Secretary Noam said. “Allowing TPS beneficiaries in Yemen to temporarily remain in the United States is contrary to our national interest.”We are prioritizing our national security interests and putting America first.”
According to DHS, TPS beneficiaries from Yemen who have no other legal basis to remain in the United States have 60 days to voluntarily leave the United States. We urge foreign nationals leaving the United States to use the U.S. Customs and Border Protection CBP app to report their departure from the United States. The app offers a safe, secure way to self-deport, including a free plane ticket, a $2,600 exit bonus, and potential future opportunities for legal immigration.
According to DHS, after the effective date of termination, the Department of Homeland Security may arrest and deport any Yemeni national after their TPS expires. If a foreigner forces DHS to arrest and remove them, they will never be allowed to return to the United States.
