MUSTANG:- Goods worth over Rs. 12.22 billion have been imported through the Mustang Customs Office, located at Nechung in Lomanthang Rural Municipality–4 of Upper Mustang, by mid-April 2026 of the current fiscal year.
The customs office, which imports goods for household use and for tourists visiting Mustang, has handled imports worth Rs. 12.22 billion and exports worth Rs. 205.5 million since it came into commercial operation on September 15, 2025.
It has collected revenue of Rs. 5.73 billion from the import and export of goods during the review period, according to Customs Office Chief Ramesh Khadka.
He said that snowfall and Chinese festivals had some impact on import and export activities, and that priority has been given to the inspection and clearance of goods at the customs office.
Containers carrying electric vehicles and other goods from Zhongba County in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China via the Korala route have been arriving less frequently than in the past.
With the operation of the Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani customs points, traders have started using these shorter routes for transportation, leading to reduced activity at the Korala border.
A total of 1,818 containers have imported electric vehicles, household goods, cosmetics, electronic equipment, clothes, shoes, and other items, while 137 containers have exported handicrafts, garments, and similar goods from Nepal to Tibet.
So far, 2,347 electric vehicles have entered through the Korala border. However, not a single electric vehicle has been imported in the past month.
After inspection and clearance at the customs office located about 14 kilometres below the Korala border, goods are transported to Pokhara via the 186-kilometre Korala–Jomsom–Beni road section.
As winter subsides, trade activities and transportation of goods through the Korala border have increased, bringing more movement of labourers, drivers, and local traders in the area.
Located at an altitude of 4,650 metres above sea level, the Korala border had closed in the 1960s following geopolitical tensions after Tibet’s integration into China. It was officially reopened on November 13, 2023.
