ADELAIDE:- The University of Adelaide in Australia has awarded a Nepali student with the ‘Bright Spark Award’ for developing a communications toolkit that uses AI to support work in the mining and industrial sectors.
The university organized a special program on the occasion of its silver jubilee and honored Shyam Sundar Shrestha, 22, from Kathmandu, who is studying at the undergraduate level, with the prestigious award.
The university has clarified that Nepali student Shrestha and his team have been awarded with high marks for developing an ‘AI module’ for mining and heavy industries.
It is said that the device they invented, when connected to an analog radio network, can allow workers in tunnels (mining areas) and AI agents to communicate via walkie-talkies.
According to the university, this technology can quickly and easily provide technical data, safety protocols, and other important information to workers without the need for expensive new infrastructure.
In the competition organized in the presence of about 300 distinguished industrialists and businessmen, Nepali student Shyam Sundar Shrestha gave a live demonstration of the technology while wearing full mining safety gear.
He said that after being honored with the award for playing a special role in innovation, he came to Australia and studied hard, thereby increasing the prestige of Nepal and Nepalis.
The university has stated that it has been rewarding young students involved in inventions, especially with the idea of helping to simplify and facilitate creative work related to innovation and entrepreneurship, including startups.
This type of program, which began in 2001, is said to have helped launch more than 1,100 startups.
