Nepali Congress calls central committee meeting today

-

KATHMANDU:- The Nepali Congress has called its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting for 1 pm on Tuesday. The meeting to be held at the party’s central office in Sanepa, Lalitpur, is expected to address internal matters following recent political developments.

Acting Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal confirmed that office bearers, central members, and provincial presidents have been instructed to attend the meeting. The upcoming meeting is expected to focus primarily on preparations for the party’s 15th General Convention. Leaders are also set to discuss candidate reports, disciplinary measures, and the party’s future political strategy.

The decision to prioritise the general convention follows a previous two-day CWC meeting that concluded on Sunday, during which leaders agreed to shift attention towards regular organisational processes.

A significant outcome of the earlier meeting was the rejection of President Gagan Thapa’s resignation. Thapa had tendered resignation after the party’s defeat in the March 5 elections.

However, the committee declined his resignation, stating that leadership should not be assessed solely on the basis of a single electoral outcome. Following this decision, Thapa is expected to chair Tuesday’s meeting.

The meeting comes amid increased activity within party factions, particularly those aligned with former president Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala.  These groups have reportedly held separate discussions aimed at shaping the party’s direction.

Some dissatisfaction has emerged within sections of the party following the election results, and there are indications that parallel consultations may continue. Party sources suggest that the Central Working Committee meeting may continue for several days, given the wide range of issues to be addressed. In addition to reviewing the election outcome and preparing for the general convention, leaders are expected to focus on strengthening internal unity and organisational effectiveness.
