BANKE:- The Nepal–India border along Banke district, stretching approximately 65 kilometres, will be completely sealed for three days in view of the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
According to the District Administration Office, Banke, the Jamunaha border point along with all adjoining border points in the district will remain closed for 72 hours to ensure the election is conducted in a free, fair, peaceful and independent environment.
Chief District Officer Dil Kumar Tamang said the decision was made following a recent meeting of the security officials from border districts of Nepal and India. As per the agreement, all Nepal–India border points in Banke will be fully closed from March 2 midnight to March 5 midnight.
He said that the Indian authorities have also agreed to seal the border from their side to strengthen election security arrangements.
During the specified period, the movement of all vehicles and individuals across the border will be strictly prohibited, the District Administration Office stated.
Meanwhile, the District Police Office, Banke, has warned that legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to force entry during the closure.
Superintendent of Police Angur GC said security personnel would be increased at the main Jamunaha checkpoint and other auxiliary crossings. Continuous security patrols will be conducted from March 2 until the night of March 5, including joint patrols by the Nepali and Indian security forces.
Most polling stations in Banke district, which shares an open border with India, have been categorised as highly sensitive. Accordingly, enhanced security arrangements and additional manpower have been deployed, SP GC said.
The district administration further stated that regular discussions and coordination meetings between security officials of both countries are ongoing to ensure effective border security.
