KATHMANDU:- With just eight days remaining for the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5, the Election Commission (EC) has urged all concerned not to obstruct election campaigning by any political party or candidate.
Issuing a reminder ahead of polls, the Commission stated that preventing candidates or parties from carrying out election publicity is a punishable offence under federal law. Individuals found guilty of such acts may face a fine of up to Rs 200,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
The EC emphasised that no one is allowed to hinder political parties or candidates from conducting campaign activities, nor can anyone prevent citizens from exercising their right to vote. Any attempt to disrupt campaign events or restrict voter participation will invite legal action.
According to the Commission, it has been closely monitoring election publicity activities through multiple channels. It has also received complaints alleging that rival groups obstructed some parties and candidates from carrying out campaign programmes. Reports published in various media outlets regarding such incidents have drawn the Commission’s serious attention.
The election code of conduct, already in effect, clearly outlines permissible activities for political parties, candidates and their sister organisations during the election period. It strictly prohibits disruption of campaign events, including rallies, gatherings, meetings and other promotional programmes.
Reiterating its commitment to ensuring a free and fair election, the EC warned that depriving citizens of their voting rights is a serious offence and will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
