566 Non-resident Nepali citizenship issued in 3 months Article 14 of the Constitution of Nepal makes provisions regarding citizenship for non-resident Nepalis.

KATHMANDU:- In the last three months, 566 people have received Non-resident Nepali citizenship. According to the data released by the Ministry of Home Affairs from 18 October to 30 December, 2025, this number of Non-resident Nepali citizenship have been distributed.

The ministry’s statement states that a total of 202,956 different types of citizenship certificates were issued during the same period. Of these, the number of people who have acquired citizenship on the basis of descent is 119,012. Similarly, 26 people have acquired naturalized citizenship, while the number of people who have acquired naturalized citizenship through marriage has reached 3,340.

Article 14 of the Constitution of Nepal makes provisions regarding citizenship for non-resident Nepalis. According to this provision, a legal basis has been created to grant citizenship to people of Nepali origin living abroad so that they can enjoy economic, social, and cultural rights.

The process of distributing citizenship began only after the relevant federal law came into effect. The path to implementation was cleared after the Citizenship Amendment Bill was certified by the President on 31 May 2023.

After that, on 17 October, 2023, the then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal formally began the distribution by granting citizenship to Kul Acharya and Badri KC, the chairmen of the International Coordination Council of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA).
